Globe Life Insurance Review: What the "$1 First Month" Offer Buys

An honest look at Globe Life's direct-to-consumer life insurance: how the $1 first-month offer works, coverage amounts, how term premiums rise in five-year age bands, when coverage ends, and who it fits.

Globe Life’s direct mail and TV offers (“$1 buys $100,000 of life insurance”) are mainly for its adult term life policy, sold directly with no medical exam. Globe Life also offers children’s whole life for the same $1 first month. The bottom line: the $1 covers your first month only. After that you pay the regular rate for your age, and on the adult term plan that rate goes up every five years. In Michigan, coverage ends at age 90. It’s an easy way to get a modest amount of coverage quickly. If you want a lifelong premium that never changes, compare it with level-premium options first.

The details below come from Globe Life’s own website and published rate schedules as of October 2026.

Who Globe Life is

“Globe Life” is the marketing name for Globe Life Inc. and its insurance subsidiaries. The direct-to-consumer policies on its “Buy Direct” page come from Globe Life And Accident Insurance Company in McKinney, Texas. In New York, they come from Globe Life Insurance Company of New York. Globe Life says Globe Life And Accident Insurance Company is rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best (as of 11/25).

On its main site, Globe Life also lists whole life, final expense, accidental death and mortgage protection coverage. Those are sold by mail or through an agent. This review focuses on the advertised direct offers.

How the “$1 for the first month” offer works

Globe Life’s fine print explains it: “$1 pays for the first month’s adult coverage.” After that, your premium follows Globe Life’s published rate schedule for your age. For children’s whole life, the $1 also pays the first month, and then the rate is set by the child’s current age and guaranteed for life.

So the $1 offer is a first-month promotion, not the ongoing price. That’s normal for this kind of marketing. The real question is what you’ll pay in month two, and in year six, and in year eleven.

The adult term policy

According to Globe Life’s Buy Direct page and rate schedules:

  • Coverage choices: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, $50,000 or $100,000. The rate tables also show $75,000.
  • No medical exam, just a simple application. Globe Life advertises “No Waiting Period – Full Coverage the First Day.”
  • Premiums rise in five-year steps. Globe Life’s schedule says, “Your initial premium is based on your age at issue; premiums increase as you enter each new five-year age period.”
  • When it ends: in Michigan and most states, it’s a “modified premium term-to-age-90” policy. The final period starts at 86, and the policy ends at the anniversary after your 90th birthday. In Alabama, DC, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and New York, it’s term to age 80.
  • Older applicants: in the Michigan schedule, the 81–89 age bands are listed for renewals only, and the footnotes say the $75,000 and $100,000 amounts aren’t available for new policies at older ages.
  • Contestability: after two years in force, Globe Life says it won’t question the policy’s validity except for nonpayment. Suicide within two years of issue is excluded.

What the age-band pricing looks like

Here’s Globe Life’s own published Michigan schedule for $10,000 of adult term coverage (standard class, monthly, after the first month):

Age bandWomenMen
61–65$24.33$36.08
66–70$30.64$48.57
71–75$40.33$66.69
76–80$54.20$85.02
81–85 (renewals only)$80.55$115.35
86–89 (renewals only)$106.99$161.49

The pattern matters more than any single number. A policy that’s affordable at 62 costs more than four times as much by the late 80s, and then it ends at 90. That isn’t a flaw, it’s how age-banded term works. But it’s very different from a whole life policy whose premium is locked on day one.

What Globe Life does well

  • Easy to buy. You can apply online or by mail without an exam, and you can do it without an agent.
  • Full coverage from the first day on the adult term policy. Globe Life advertises no waiting period.
  • Small amounts are available. $5,000 and $10,000 options make it easy to start with a little coverage.
  • Published rate schedules. You can see the future premiums for each age band before you buy, which we appreciate.

What to weigh before you buy

  1. The $1 is one month. Budget for the regular premium starting in month two.
  2. The premium steps up every five years. If you’re on a fixed income, plan for those increases, especially after 75.
  3. It’s term, so it ends. At 90 in Michigan, or 80 in some states. If the goal is money for a funeral whenever it happens, you may outlive the coverage.
  4. Compare the long-run cost. Add up the premiums for each age band you expect to pay, then compare that total with a level-premium quote that doesn’t end. The cheaper option today isn’t always the cheaper option over 15 or 20 years.

Who Globe Life genuinely fits

  • Younger adults and families who want a small amount of coverage fast, without an exam or an agent visit.
  • People with a temporary need, like a car loan or a few years of income protection, who are comfortable with five-year rate increases.
  • Grandparents looking at a small children’s whole life policy with a rate locked for life.

For a lifelong final-expense goal, people in their 60s and 70s usually do better comparing level-premium whole life. Many can qualify for day-one coverage by answering a few health questions.
