Life insurance rates by age — FAQ
How much does life insurance cost by age?
Price rises with every year of age. For a healthy non-smoker, a 20-year, $500,000 term policy can run under $35 a month at 25–30 at the most competitive carriers and several hundred a month by 60; final expense coverage rises the same way. The chart on this page shows real ranges for each age.
At what age is life insurance cheapest?
The younger and healthier you are, the cheaper it is — and term and whole life premiums are locked in when you buy, so buying earlier keeps the lower price for the life of the policy (or the whole term).
Why does life insurance get more expensive with age?
Because the chance of a claim during the policy rises with age, and health conditions become more common. Each birthday typically raises the premium you’d be quoted.
Is it too late to get life insurance at 70 or 80?
No. Final expense whole life is widely available into the 80s, some with day-one coverage; guaranteed-acceptance plans cover those whose health rules out the others.
