Reserves before permanent insurance
A drought fund protects everything else, including the policy.
By profession · Sales
Salespeople live on variance: a record quarter, then a drought. IUL’s flexible premiums fit that rhythm — and the same flexibility is how sales pros underfund a policy into lapse. Here’s the honest fit for commission income, and the discipline that separates the ones that work from the ones that don’t.
Who this is for: Account executives, medical and tech sales reps, and 1099 sales professionals with commission-heavy income.
W-2 reps: capture the 401(k) match every pay period — even in a slump — and fill the plan in strong years. 1099 reps: a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k) shelters a large share of income with a deduction. Both: liquid reserves sized to a drought (this matters more for salespeople than anyone), a term policy sized to the family, and a Roth (backdoor if needed). Only then does surplus exist for a permanent policy.
For a rep with reserves, term, and qualified buckets handled, a max-funded IUL is a natural next bucket: overfund in record years within the MEC limit, fund less in lean ones, and let a well-capitalized policy lend to its owner through a drought via loans that aren’t taxable while the policy stays in force. The discipline: the multi-year average must sit well above the minimum. A policy that drifts to minimum funding through a two-year slump is a lapse in waiting — set the funding target from an average year, not a record one.

Straight answers
For a sales professional with reserves, term coverage, and qualified buckets handled — yes, as a flexible, differently-taxed bucket that can even lend during a slump. For one without reserves or with a premium sized from a record year, flexible premiums become an underfunding trap. Size the design from an average year.
You can pay more in strong years (up to the MEC limit) and less in lean ones, as long as the multi-year average stays well above the minimum. The carrier’s minimum keeps the policy in force short-term; sustained minimum funding lapses it long-term.
Commonly a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k), which shelter a large share of self-employment income with a tax deduction, before any after-tax insurance funding. We’re licensed for life insurance, not securities; confirm with your CPA.
