Aetna (Accendo)
Simplified-issue whole life to age 89 — level plans only past 75; health questions and a prescription check apply. The one door that stays open after 85.
Seniors · 85 and over
Most websites get vague here. We won't. At 85, most of our panel still issues — including one policy with no health questions at all. At 86 and beyond, it narrows to a single carrier that issues to 89, with questions. Here's the precise map, verified September 2026.
At 85 (age last birthday)
Issue ages and maximums from the carriers’ published product materials; all subject to underwriting where health questions apply.
Simplified-issue whole life to age 89 — level plans only past 75; health questions and a prescription check apply. The one door that stays open after 85.
Living Promise level plan to 85 with health questions — and Guaranteed Whole Life, guaranteed acceptance ages 45–85 with no health questions at all.
PlanRight Preferred and Standard tiers issue to 85, with reduced maximums at 81–85.
Immediate Solution and FE Express Solution issue to 85, with reduced maximums at 76–85.
Senior Choice issues to 85; Eagle Premier issues to 85 for non-nicotine applicants.
At 86–89
Past 85, our panel narrows to Aetna’s Accendo final expense whole life, which issues through age 89 on its level plans (the modified plan stops at 75). It asks health questions and runs a prescription check; agencies report coverage of up to $25,000 at 86–89. Premiums at this age are high — that’s the honest cost of an insurer taking on a promise it may pay soon — but they’re level, and the benefit never shrinks.
The knockouts to know before the call: oxygen use in the last 12 months (CPAP doesn’t count), congestive heart failure, dialysis, cancer treatment in the last two years or more than one cancer, transplants, dementia or memory loss, and help with daily activities. Clear those and day-one coverage is possible at 87 — the same carrier that just insured a client of ours at that exact age.
If Accendo declines, a few carriers outside our final expense panel issue to 90 with health questions. We’ll tell you honestly whether that’s worth pursuing for your situation. What does not exist — from any carrier we can verify — is a guaranteed-acceptance policy after 85.
Straight answers
Not that we can verify from any carrier, on our panel or off it. Guaranteed-acceptance policies top out at 85 (Mutual of Omaha) or 80 (Corebridge, Americo, and the well-known off-panel options). After 85, every policy we can source asks health questions. We’d rather tell you that plainly than let a call center string you along.
Yes — through one carrier on our panel. Aetna’s Accendo final expense whole life issues to age 89 with health questions and a prescription check; agencies report coverage of up to $25,000 at 86–89, and premiums at that age are genuinely high. If Accendo declines, a few carriers outside our final expense panel issue to 90 with health questions; we’ll say honestly whether that’s worth pursuing. There is no guaranteed-acceptance option at 87.
Yes — more than any other birthday. Issue age is age last birthday on every panel product, and most stop at 85: Mutual of Omaha (including its guaranteed-acceptance policy), Foresters, Transamerica, American Amicable, and Americo all close at the 86th birthday. Applying at 85 means eight options and a no-questions door; applying at 86 means one carrier, with questions.
Act before the 86th birthday: Mutual of Omaha’s Guaranteed Whole Life accepts applicants to 85 with no health questions, up to $25,000, with a two-year graded period for natural-cause death and full accidental coverage from day one. Your parent must be able to understand and sign the application themselves; you can pay the premium. After 85, that door is gone.
Honest answer: if the full amount is already set aside and fenced off, self-funding can be rational. If it isn’t, a policy creates the full benefit after the graded period for a fraction of the amount, pays income-tax-free, and typically bypasses probate — arriving in weeks. At 85-plus the premiums are real money; we’ll show you the honest math either way.
Before the next birthday
A few basic questions are genuinely all we need to see which doors are open at your exact age and health. Straight answers, no exam to look, and we'll tell you honestly if a door is closed — including the ones that close on the next birthday.
