Day-one level coverage
Transamerica’s 2023 chart rates cirrhosis and liver disease Standard as a single condition; American Amicable offers Immediate coverage once cirrhosis or liver disease is more than three years from diagnosis or treatment.
Health & coverage · Liver
Liver conditions span everything from a fatty-liver note on a scan to cirrhosis and liver failure — and carriers treat each one differently. Some publish day-one or graded paths even for cirrhosis; others decline it outright. Knowing your exact diagnosis, and when it was last treated, is how we find the right door. Here’s the honest map.
The honest landscape
Start with the hardest news, because you deserve it straight: cirrhosis closes several doors. NewBridge lists cirrhosis of the liver as not eligible, ever. Royal Neighbors’ Ensured Legacy guide offers cirrhosis only its guaranteed-issue plan. Corebridge’s fully underwritten guide declines it automatically, and American Amicable treats liver failure as a knockout on Senior Choice.
But real paths remain. Transamerica’s 2023 chart lists cirrhosis — and liver disease other than fatty liver — at Standard, day-one coverage, as a single condition; two Standard-rated conditions together route to its graded Easy Solution. Transamerica’s FE Express guide routes cirrhosis, and even liver failure, to its graded product. American Amicable’s Senior Choice runs on time: cirrhosis diagnosed or treated within two years goes to its return-of-premium plan, within three years to Graded, and beyond three to Immediate. United Home Life routes liver disease of every kind to its graded Express Issue plan, and NewBridge’s Modified plan takes a chronic liver condition short of cirrhosis.
Fatty liver deserves its own sentence: Transamerica’s chart carves it out of the liver-disease row, while United Home Life lists it right alongside cirrhosis — so the same scan result reads differently by carrier. Medications tell the story too: Aetna’s published drug list rules out its Level and Graded final expense plans when a water pill like furosemide (Lasix) is prescribed for cirrhosis. And beneath everything, guaranteed-issue whole life asks nothing. Mutual of Omaha’s runs to 85, Corebridge’s and Americo’s to 80 — with a graded period for natural-cause death in the first two years (three at Americo) and full accidental coverage from day one.
Your realistic paths
Transamerica’s 2023 chart rates cirrhosis and liver disease Standard as a single condition; American Amicable offers Immediate coverage once cirrhosis or liver disease is more than three years from diagnosis or treatment.
Transamerica’s FE Express (cirrhosis and liver failure), United Home Life (all liver disease), NewBridge (chronic liver conditions short of cirrhosis), and American Amicable inside three years: a limited benefit early, the full benefit after.
No health questions at all. Mutual of Omaha to 85, Corebridge and Americo to 80; Royal Neighbors places cirrhosis in its guaranteed-issue plan. Accidents covered in full from day one. Nobody in the eligible ages is simply uninsurable.
What moves the needle
Fatty liver, a chronic liver condition, cirrhosis, and liver failure are separate rows on the published guides — NewBridge alone splits them into Modified versus not eligible. Ask your doctor which words are in your chart.
American Amicable moves cirrhosis from its return-of-premium plan (within two years) to Graded (within three) to Immediate after that, counting from diagnosis or treatment.
On Transamerica’s 2023 chart, cirrhosis alone is Standard — but two Standard-rated conditions together route to the graded Easy Solution. Fewer active conditions means better doors.
Inside the application
Where the doors are
Every carrier draws its lines differently — these documented niches are why we shop your exact situation instead of accepting the first answer. Sources labeled; guidelines change without notice.
The 2023 Immediate Solution chart rates cirrhosis and liver disease (fatty liver excluded) at Standard as single conditions; the 2026 FE Express guide routes cirrhosis and liver failure to its graded product — 110% of premiums for non-accidental death in years one and two, full benefit after.
Our full Transamerica reviewSenior Choice: cirrhosis diagnosed or treated within two years → return-of-premium plan; within three → Graded; beyond three → Immediate. Liver failure is a knockout.
Our full American Amicable reviewLiver disease — cirrhosis, hepatitis B/C, and fatty liver alike — routes to the graded Express Issue whole life plan; there’s no term plan for liver disease.
Cirrhosis is not eligible. A chronic liver condition short of cirrhosis gets the Modified plan (110%, then 120%, of premiums in years one and two; full benefit from year three), and chronic hepatitis is Standard. Not sold in CA, FL, NY, or SC.
Cirrhosis is guaranteed issue only on the Ensured Legacy guide: ages 50–80, $3,000–$10,000, 110% of premiums for natural-cause death in years one and two, full benefit after; accidents covered in full.
Our full Royal Neighbors of America reviewFully underwritten guide (2025): cirrhosis of the liver is an automatic decline. Corebridge’s guaranteed-issue whole life, by contrast, asks no health questions.

Yes, but not everywhere — and rarely at the best tiers. Transamerica’s 2023 chart rates cirrhosis Standard as a single condition, its FE Express routes it to a graded plan, American Amicable grades it within three years of diagnosis or treatment, and United Home Life offers graded whole life. NewBridge and Corebridge’s fully underwritten products decline it, and Royal Neighbors offers only guaranteed issue. Guaranteed-issue whole life is always the floor.
It depends on the carrier — which is exactly why we ask before you apply. Transamerica’s chart excludes fatty liver from its liver-disease row, while United Home Life lists fatty liver in the same row as cirrhosis and hepatitis, routing to its graded plan. Bring us the exact wording from your doctor and we’ll match it to the right application.
Honestly, most health-question doors close. American Amicable lists liver failure as a knockout, and transplant questions — had or been advised to have — end applications at Transamerica, American Amicable, and NewBridge. Transamerica’s FE Express is the published exception for liver failure, routing it to a graded plan, though its other questions (hospice, terminal illness, repeated hospitalizations) still apply. Guaranteed-issue whole life asks nothing at all.
The alcohol history runs on its own published clock. Transamerica’s 2023 chart declines alcohol treatment within two years, grades two to four years, and rates Standard at four to ten; its FE Express declines inside two years, rates Select at two to five, and Premier after five. NewBridge declines treatment within 24 months and rates it Preferred after that, and American Amicable uses its return-of-premium plan within two years. Recovery time genuinely moves you up — and we never judge how you got here.
