Day-one level coverage at non-tobacco rates
Once the lookback clears, you’re priced like someone who never smoked — at every tier your health qualifies for.
Health & coverage · Quitting smoking
Quitting is the single biggest thing you can do for your life insurance rate — and the timeline is shorter than most people think. Here are the real clocks at each carrier, what restarts them (patches count), and the honest mechanics of the one program that lets you start at non-nicotine rates while you quit.
The honest landscape
The industry-standard clock is 12 consecutive months from your last nicotine use — that’s when most simplified-issue carriers on our panel move you to non-tobacco rates. Americo runs a longer 24-month clock for its standard non-nicotine class. On fully underwritten term, Banner rewards longer abstinence: 12 months for a standard non-tobacco class, 24 for Preferred, 36 for the best class.
What restarts the clock: any nicotine, including the tools you used to quit. Patches, gum, and lozenges are nicotine at every carrier that defines the term, and Foresters’ published drug chart rates a Chantix or nicotine-replacement prescription filled in the last year at smoker rates. The honest plan is to finish nicotine replacement, then start the 12-month count.
And the exception worth knowing: Americo’s Quit Smoking Advantage is the only published program on our panel that gives an active smoker non-nicotine rates from day one — with a test built in. Qualifying smokers on Eagle Select 1 or 2 are issued at non-nicotine rates for the first three policy years. If you provide satisfactory evidence that you quit for at least 12 consecutive months after issue, before the third anniversary, you keep those rates for life. If you don’t, the policy changes — and the default change cuts your death benefit. We explain that plainly below, because a lot of agents don’t.
Your realistic paths
Once the lookback clears, you’re priced like someone who never smoked — at every tier your health qualifies for.
Issued as a smoker but charged non-nicotine rates for three years. Verify 12 consecutive nicotine-free months after issue and the rate is permanent. Don’t, and by default the death benefit decreases from year four (or you elect a higher nicotine premium to keep it).
If health questions are the obstacle, guaranteed-issue coverage prices smokers and non-smokers identically.
What moves the needle
Non-tobacco rates at Mutual of Omaha, Transamerica, Royal Neighbors, Foresters, American Amicable, and Liberty Bankers; Standard non-tobacco at Banner.
Americo’s standard non-nicotine class; Banner’s Preferred class.
Banner’s best class. Banner’s guide also says an existing policy can be re-rated to non-tobacco on request once you qualify — worth a phone call, not a new application.

Quit Smoking Advantage on Eagle Select 1 and 2: non-nicotine rates for three years, permanent if you verify 12 consecutive nicotine-free months after issue. The 12 months must start after the policy is issued — quitting nine months before doesn’t count toward it. Not available on Eagle Select 3.

It depends on what you need and when. Every panel simplified-issue carrier except Americo flips to non-tobacco at 12 months, so two more months earns a meaningfully lower lifetime rate. But coverage in force today protects your family today — and some people buy now at tobacco rates and re-qualify later. We’ll lay out both honestly; there’s no entitlement to a re-rate, so treat it as a plan, not a promise.
No — nicotine replacement is nicotine at every carrier that defines the term, and Foresters’ published drug chart rates a cessation prescription in the last year at smoker rates. The honest sequence: finish the patches or gum, then begin the 12-month count.
By default (Option A), your death benefit decreases from the fourth policy year while your premium stays level — Americo’s own illustration shows a substantial reduction. You can instead elect Option B to keep the full benefit and pay the nicotine premium from year four. If you do verify 12 consecutive nicotine-free months, Option C keeps both the benefit and the non-nicotine rate for life. Ask us to walk through all three before you sign — that’s the honest way to use this program.
One search, every door
A few basic questions — age, state, and your honest health picture — are exactly what lets us quote you accurately across the whole panel. A decline somewhere else is the start of our search, not the end. No exam to look, no spam, no pressure.
