How much does cremation cost?
Short answer
A cremation with a viewing and funeral service had a national median cost of $6,280 in the National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 study. Direct cremation, with no embalming, viewing or service, costs far less, but prices vary widely. A 2026 consumer survey in the Rochester, N.Y., area found $1,300 to $3,900, and one metro Detroit provider lists packages from $1,090 to $2,285 plus a $300 crematory fee. An urn, a niche or a burial plot costs extra.
Cremation is now the most common choice in the U.S. The NFDA projected a 63.4% cremation rate for 2025. It usually costs less than a traditional burial, but “cremation” covers everything from a simple direct cremation to a full funeral with a viewing, and the price swings accordingly.
Cremation with a viewing and service: $6,280 median
This is what goes into the NFDA’s 2023 national median for a funeral with a viewing followed by cremation:
| Item | 2023 national median |
|---|---|
| Basic services of funeral director and staff | $2,495 |
| Transfer of remains to the funeral home | $395 |
| Embalming | $845 |
| Other preparation of the body | $295 |
| Use of facilities and staff for viewing | $475 |
| Use of facilities and staff for funeral ceremony | $550 |
| Service car or van | $175 |
| Basic printed memorial package | $195 |
| Cremation fee (if a third-party crematory is used) | $400 |
| Cremation container | $160 |
| Urn | $295 |
| Total | $6,280 |
The NFDA’s median doesn’t include a cemetery niche or plot, flowers, or an obituary.
Direct cremation: the lowest-cost option
Direct cremation means the body is cremated shortly after death, without embalming, a viewing or a ceremony at the funeral home. Families often hold a memorial service later, on their own terms. Published prices vary a lot:
| Source | Direct cremation price |
|---|---|
| Funeral Consumers Alliance of Greater Rochester, 2026 survey of Rochester, N.Y.-area funeral homes | $1,300–$3,900, including the crematory fee |
| Cremation Society of Michigan, Garden City (price list effective July 20, 2026) | $1,090–$2,285 for direct cremation packages, with a $300 crematory fee listed separately |
| Consumer Federation of America and Funeral Consumers Alliance, 2016 survey of 142 providers in 10 metro areas | $495–$7,595 for the same basic service |
That last survey also found that 22% of providers advertised a direct cremation price that didn’t include the cremation itself, adding $200 to $595 to the bill. When you compare prices, ask whether the quote includes the crematory fee.
What direct cremation usually includes
In the Rochester survey’s definition, a direct cremation includes the funeral home’s basic services with an alternative container, the crematory fee, and returning the cremated remains to the family. It doesn’t include embalming or using the funeral home for a visitation or service.
Federal rules help you keep it simple:
- No casket required. No state or local law requires a casket for cremation. A funeral home that offers cremation must tell you that alternative containers, such as fiberboard or unfinished wood, are available.
- Embalming usually isn’t required. Under the FTC’s Funeral Rule, providers must tell you that, except in certain special cases, embalming isn’t required by law, and that you can choose arrangements like direct cremation that don’t need it.
- Bring your own urn. A funeral home can’t refuse an urn you bought elsewhere or charge you a fee for using it.
Urns and a final resting place
The NFDA’s median urn was $295 in 2023, and one Michigan price list ranges from $35 to $2,790. If the family wants the ashes in a cemetery, the Rochester-area FCA guide lists $500–$3,000 for an urn grave, $1,000–$11,000 for a columbarium niche, and $400–$1,000 to inter the urn. Scattering ashes on private property is legal in every state with the landowner’s permission.
A memorial service adds facility and staff charges. The Michigan price list above, for example, charges $550 for a service in its chapel.
Planning for it
Even a simple cremation is a bill someone has to pay within days. A final expense policy pays cash to your beneficiary, who can use it for the cremation, the urn, a memorial service or anything else. Learn more about cremation insurance, or add up your own number with the final expense calculator.
