Our honest picks · For your parents
The best burial insurance for your parents
You’re here because you’ve done the math: if mom or dad passes without coverage, the funeral lands on you. Here are the carriers that keep winning parent cases on our panel — and the honest fit for each.
Buying burial coverage on a parent is common, legal, and easier than most adult children expect: your parent consents and answers a few health questions on a short call, you own and pay for the policy, and the benefit pays to you — typically bypassing probate, right when the bills arrive.
Which carrier wins depends almost entirely on your parent’s age and health. These are our working picks, each linked to its full sourced review.
- Best overall for parents
Mutual of Omaha
A+ (Superior) · day-one level to age 85 · household name
The name your parents already trust, with A+ (Superior) strength and Living Promise’s day-one level coverage to 85. The trust factor genuinely matters here — the consent call goes easier when mom recognizes the company.

Royal Neighbors of America

Common questions
Can I really buy burial insurance on my mom or dad?
Yes — with their knowledge and consent, which every carrier requires (and which protects your parents). As their child you automatically have insurable interest. You own the policy and pay the premium; your parent answers a few health questions on a short call; the benefit pays to you or the family. Our full guide to insuring a parent walks through every step.
How much burial coverage should I get on a parent?
Size it to the real job: the funeral plus final bills, which routinely total well into five figures once the cemetery and extras are counted. Most families land between $10,000 and $25,000. Our free Final Expense Planning Guide includes a worksheet to pin down your number.
What if my parent is in poor health?
There is almost always still a path. Carriers differ enormously — Royal Neighbors often gives day-one coverage to health histories others grade, and guaranteed-acceptance policies (no health questions, two-year graded benefit) remain open through age 80 regardless. Nobody in the eligible ages is simply uninsurable.
Will my siblings and I fight over the payout?
Not if it’s set up cleanly — and that’s a five-minute fix now versus a family fracture later. The beneficiary designation can name multiple siblings in exact percentages, and because it pays outside probate, there’s no estate ambiguity to argue over. We help families structure this every week.
