Leaving American Income Life: what changes when you go independent
You already know how to run a kitchen-table or Zoom presentation, handle objections, and work a lead list. Going independent changes who you can sell for — not what you’re good at.
The short answer
American Income Life is part of Globe Life, and its agents are independent contractors who sell exclusively for Globe Life. When you leave, your state license stays with you, but the AIL appointment ends and future renewals depend on the vesting terms in your contract — Globe Life says commission streams revert to the company when an agent is terminated. Independent agents sell for many carriers; at agencies that provide leads, you don’t have to buy your own.
How the AIL model works (from Globe Life’s own filings)
- Globe Life describes its American Income Life Division as an exclusive agency that markets to members of labor unions and other affinity groups. AIL’s own site lists unions, credit unions, associations and fraternal organizations among the groups it serves.
- Agents are independent contractors that exclusively sell for Globe Life (Globe Life 2025 10-K).
- Leads come from internally generated leads, third-party internet vendor leads and referrals, according to the 10-K.
- Advances: Globe Life says it generally advances up to 65% of first-year commissions, repaid from commissions over about a year.
- Renewals: AIL’s recruiting site describes a vested renewal system “based on the vesting provisions of the contract,” while the 10-K describes agents’ future commission streams reverting to the company if an agent is terminated. Your contract decides which renewals you keep.
What happens when you leave
| What to expect | What to check | |
|---|---|---|
| License | Stays with you — an appointment cancellation doesn’t affect your license | Your lines of authority and non-resident states |
| Appointment | Your AIL appointment is cancelled | That you have no open complaints or unreturned materials |
| Renewals | Depend on your contract’s vesting terms | Exactly what you keep — get it in writing |
| Advance balance | Unearned advances may have to be repaid | Your current balance before you give notice |
| Clients | Policies are Globe Life’s | Any non-solicitation terms in your agreement |
What independent looks like after AIL
| At AIL | Independent | |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Globe Life’s products | Dozens of carriers — final expense, term, whole life, IUL |
| Health issues | One company’s underwriting | Shop the carrier that takes each client’s history |
| Market | Union, credit union and affinity members | Anyone in the states you’re licensed in |
| Leads | Company and vendor leads plus referrals | Depends on the agency — at United Eagles, leads are provided |
| Presentation | The company’s presentation and system | The agency’s process — ask to see it before you sign |
The skills that carry over directly: running a structured presentation, asking health questions, handling objections, and working a high volume of leads. What’s new is underwriting across carriers — which is where the extra approvals (and extra income) come from.
Coming to United Eagles from AIL
Leads are provided — you don’t buy your own. You work real prospects from your first week on the phones, so your money goes into your pocket, not a lead vendor’s. We train you on carrier-by-carrier underwriting so you can place the clients one company would have declined. You get a written six-step launch path, recorded-call coaching, and a contract level in writing before you sign — 1099 commission, uncapped, income never guaranteed, no fee to join.

Straight answers
Common questions
Are American Income Life agents independent contractors?
Yes. Globe Life’s 2025 annual report says agents of American Income Life, Liberty National and Family Heritage are independent contractors that exclusively sell for Globe Life.
Do I keep my renewals if I leave American Income Life?
It depends on the vesting provisions of your contract. AIL describes a vested renewal system, and Globe Life’s filings describe commission streams reverting to the company when an agent is terminated. Get your specific terms in writing before you leave.
Can I keep my license if I leave AIL?
Yes. Your producer license is issued to you by your state. Leaving cancels the AIL appointment, not the license — you’ll be appointed with new carriers through your new agency.
Where do AIL agents go after leaving?
Many move to independent agencies, where they can sell for many carriers and serve clients outside union and affinity markets. If you’re used to working provided leads, look for an agency that provides them rather than one that makes you buy your own.
